As Political as I Get

As many of my faithful readers know, having read all the reasons Why I Don’t Vote, the political process and machine is entirely uninteresting to me, as broken as it is solved. I’m going to suspend my reviews of popular serialized television drama (with my review of Damages coming tomorrow), to address, rather call bullshit on one particular war being current raged: the war against Girl Scout Cookies.  Full Crazy Text

Mad Men: Maybe Something Happens in Season 30

This review may cost me some friends, as nearly every human being on the planet I have encountered absolutely adores this show. It came highly recommended to me, and after having watched two seasons, I could not have been more disappointed. I was told that perhaps giving it “only two seasons” wasn’t doing the show justice, as I apparently now owe serialized television 40+ hours of run time to “find its stride.” That, in addition to running out of show for a stretch, prompted me to re-watch the first two seasons in addition to all other episodes in seasons beyond it. After that exhaustive re-examination of Mad Men, its stories, characters, exploits and art direction, I left even more disappointed than I had been the first time.  Full Crazy Text

Breaking Bad: Derp or Gold?

Another critically acclaimed show that has come highly recommended to me is the AMC program Breaking Bad. This show came very well advertised, and I was keenly aware of its existence when it originally aired, but I have waited until very recently to begin watching it. Why? Because it deals with arguably the lamest and most uber-derp premise ever pitched.  Full Crazy Text

Sons of Anarchy: Working Title, “The Dukes of Haphazard”

Our next program up for analysis is the FX show Sons of Anarchy, an hourlong drama about a motorcycle club in the small California town of Charming. I have survived watching two seasons to date, and will only finish out the remainder simply when I run out of other programs to watch.  Sons came to me reasonably highly recommended, and on balance I find the show to be a disappointment. It’s not a failure; the premise is great, its actors turn in fine performances, but the content of the show, in my mind, leaves endless amounts to be desired. Let’s examine in further detail.  Full Crazy Text

Downton Abbey: The Lowest Stakes Show of All Time

Contemporary television has entered an unprecedented era of quality these past 10 years. Premium networks in the United States, and creators in the UK have clearly hooked into the idea that serialized storytelling which is well-produced can very much replace film as the best means of storytelling. Over the next series of posts, I will give my thoughts on as many of the recent series making splashes that I have currently seen. We will begin here today with my review of the smash hit Downton Abbey. Full Crazy Text

Farewell, Chuck

I have been meaning to write this post for a while, and as my faithful reader(s) most likely determined a while back, I haven’t been writing many posts of all of late. However, I would like to properly send off the NBC show Chuck, the poorly publicized, little known “network show that could” which plugged along for five quality seasons, ending just a few weeks ago.  Full Crazy Text

The Obesity Non-Crisis

It seems all that’s plastered over the news these days is the obesity crisis. Granted, I don’t watch or read news, but that’s my general sense as I flick past these channels in search of SportsCenter. Michelle Obama is up in arms about childhood obesity, and everyone needs to embrace fitness and a healthy way of living. My question is, very simply, why? Full Crazy Text

Bill Belichick: Honorary Poker Player

As a resident of New England, I have followed the Patriots and Belichick’s career since the moment he took over as New England head coach. What hasn’t been said about this guy? He’s been called a genius, and the best coach of all time. He’s been called a fraud, and a cheater for the Spygate controversies. He seems to willfully spit in the face of anyone near him, whether it be the press, rival teams, or anyone who dares second guess him. Yet the one thing nobody seems to recognize is, Bill Belichick exhibits all the classic signs of a championship stakes poker player.  Full Crazy Text

Pro Bowl: List or Flag, Period

Everything about the Pro Bowl is wrong. The entire rationale for it, aside from one more opportunity to squeeze cash out of the American viewing public like were all a collective $9B sponge, is flawed and stupid. The Pro Bowl, as a game, should never be played ever again.  Full Crazy Text

Baldness and Other White People Problems

Last night I Netflixed a film called HappyThankYouMorePlease, a pretty heavy-handed and overdone piece of work presumably intended to be Josh Radnor’s Garden State. While I could devote an entire post to what amounts in my mind to a pseudo-indie failure, I’d prefer to focus on an unspoken concept raised in the film: in our culture, anything pertaining to female baldness, both the event or any solution to it is acceptable, whereas either is criminal and unacceptable in the case of men.  Full Crazy Text
